ENGL 1000: Introduction to Creative Writing

University of Denver- Spring 2022

Overview

ENGL 1000 allows students to explore the fundamental techniques of fiction and poetry. Examining the various forms of fiction such as short stories, novellas, and novels and explore the nuances of writing poetry and prose, including form, structure, and rhythm.

Through writing exercises, assignments, and. workshops, I was able to create compelling characters, craft vivid settings, and weave intricate plots that keep readers engaged.

By the end of the course, we had developed a portfolio of original work that showcased our progression of creativity through fiction.

'Stuck Singing the Same Old Songs' is the prose piece I included in my final portfolio for WRIT 1000. I have always had such a strong interest and connection to Woodstock Music Festival, and the mysterious lure it has. My love for music and the 60s is what inspired this six page piece. Since writing this, I've thought about turning this into a more complex piece with a deeper music and politics storyline but wanted to establish characters first. This was also one of my first pieces in my college career writing with different characters and dialogue which I would like to continue working on.
